During the gear design process, gear root shape is an important parameter. A higher root radius of gears will usually result in lower root stresses. During the manufacturing process, a higher root radius usually means a smaller tip radius of the tool (hobbing, shaping), which affects the wear of the tool and thus the overall manufacturing costs. It is also important to check, whether a final machining process like threaded wheel grinding, profile grinding or honing may negatively affect the gear root stresses due to the position and shape of the grinding notch. This webinar covers the Power Skiving of large internal gears. We demonstrate the production of gears with module 6 mm and a workpiece diameter larger than 600 mm, on a Gleason-Pfauter 600/800PS Power Skiving Machine with automatic tool change. The roughing process is carried out quickly and economically with a carbide insert tool and the finishing is very precise and with low wear with a solid PM tool. Furthermore, we compare this process with gear gashing with a form milling cutter and Power Skiving with a single solid PM solid steel tool for roughing and finishing. The loaded tooth contact analysis LTCA is the tool of choice for reducing the vibration excitation in gear sets and transmissions. A LTCA takes into account the housing, bearing, shaft and gear body deformations and to some extent manufacturing errors. It allows for optimization of the flank design in terms of macro- and microgeometry and ensuring minimized vibration excitation while keeping other performance parameters like efficiency, life and manufacturability at the required level.
