wide blades allow grinding of the required range of radii and the identical slot
bottom radii makes it possible to use the same cutter head with only inside
blades or with only outside blades, as is the practice in the fixed setting sys-
®
tem. The photo in Figure 4 shows a Pentac Aero cutter head with the typical
wide shoulders on either the inside or the outside blades.
When the heavy truck manufacturing industry showed interest in applying Pen-
®
tac Aero cutter heads, the wide blades with the useless volumes of expensive
carbide became a subject of criticism. At this time, Gleason began to re-think
the topic of parallel spacers and possibilities to implement them into the Pen-
®
®
tac cutter system by preserving the unique stiffness advantages of Pentac .
27.3 From Wide Shoulders to Parallel Spacers
The elimination of wide blade blanks and wide unused blade shoulders is
demonstrated in Figure 5. In the upper left graphics of Figure 5 an inside
blade with a wide shoulder at the inside and a clearance edge cutoff shows a
very unbalanced blade with a 20% waste of carbide.
