Diameter Range
27.1 Face Milling Cutter Systems
Bevel and hypoid gears which consist of the face milling geometry are cut in a
single indexing process using face cutter heads. In the distant past, face mill-
ing cutter heads had form relief ground blades which were radially bolted to the
®
cutter body. Figure 1 shows a Hardac cutter head, which has parallel spacers
and a provision for radial truing. The parallel spacers allow positioning of out-
side and inside blades at the desired point radius, given by the summary. The
truing screws are used for the precise radial fine positioning of the blades as
well as eliminating the radial runout from blade to blade.

Hardac blades, contrary to their easy radial adjustability, are very inflexible

when cutting edge geometry features should be changed. Pressure angle,
blade curvature, Toprem or edge radii changes are not possible and require

new blades with different specifications. The RSR cutter system was devel-
