22.7 Blade Assembly in Cutter Head
In Face Milling, the cutter reference height is measured from the back surface,
that connects to the machine reference seat to the tip of the blades. In Face
Milling the blades are always built to the overall cutter height or to the blade
height above head according to the cutter table. Blade stepping is unusual in
Face Milling.
In Face Hobbing, the cutter reference height is measured from the blade refer-
ence point to the cutter back surface, which connects to the machine reference
seat. In Face Hobbing in case of pinions the overall cutter height varies due to
the blade stepping. In case of face hobbed gears, the blades can be built to
the cutter table position or in a retracted position: The default in CAGE is a re-
tracted gear blade position.
The blades in both cutter types, Face Milling and Face Hobbing are adjusted in
their axial position to the overall cutter height or to the blade height above
head. Figure 21 is a reference graphic for the relationships between axial
blade position and cutter head for Face Milling and Face Hobbing.
