Gleason Corporation
1980–1989
James S. Gleason
James S. Gleason, Andrew Gleason’s grandson,
joins the company as a production control clerk in
1959. He works his way up to become President
and CEO in 1980. After retirement he will remain
on the corporate board until his passing 2022.
He faces the difficult task of restructuring the
company and focusing on its core business of
gearing. His efforts to refocus the company on
gear technology were successful as it led to many
years of growth from internal investment and
acquisition of complementary businesses.
Gleason Corporation
In 1984, The Gleason Works is restructured into Gleason Corporation. The
company now has 3,000 workers worldwide, including 1,650 in Monroe Country.
One year later, Gleason Corporation opens its first sales and service office in
Beijing, China.
Components Manufacturing
and Torsen Differential
In the early 80’s, Pennsylvania
Pressed Metals becomes part
of the Gleason Components
Group.
In 1983, Gleason acquires the
property rights of the Torsen
Differential and starts manufac-
turing of this innovative product.
