AGMA is founded

           In 1916, the American Gear
             Manufacturers Association (AGMA)
is established with Gleason as one
of the founding members. The first
AGMA meeting is held at The Gleason
           Works in 1921.
The Packard 426, first production vehicle
equipped with a hypoid differential in 1927.

           The Hypoid Gear

The Gleason Works continues to expand and introduce new products
throughout the 1920s. One of the most significant developments is the
hypoid gear, designed by gear theory expert Ernest Wildhaber. With hypoid
gears, the axis of the pinion is offset from the axis of the gear, allowing for
the manufacture of continuous drives in the textile and steel industries as
well as automotive applications, allowing manufacturers to lower the auto-
mobile frame, improving the looks and performance of the vehicle.
