Teeth are straight and parallel to the axes. The tooth has the same cross section in all planes of rotation. Tooth contact occurs along the whole length of the tooth at each instant of rotation and the line of contact between mating teeth is parallel to the axes. A spur rack has straight teeth which are at right angles to the direction of motion. An internal spur gear has teeth cut on the inner surface of a cylindrical blank with the area of tooth engagement occuring outside the line of centers. The shafts for mating internal and external gears will rotate in the same direction. The term \u201einternal\u201c gear without qualification implies on internal spur gears.<\/div>
